The Ceremony

YBS will be graduating high school in a few weeks.

Cause for celebration.

I asked him if his Yeshiva will be "doing" anything.

"Sure! It's going to be the Giving Back the Cell Phones Ceremony"

I am thrilled with that, since at least two good ones from the DIP family are in that box.

What?
You taught your child that sneaking around and disobeying his roshei yeshiva is an acceptable thing to do?
Not once, but MORE THAN ONCE???
Next thing I know, you'll be telling him that it's OK to cheat on his taxes as long as he doesn't get caught {and if he *does* get caught and sent to jail to loudly demand kosher food, three minyonim a day and an "on call" Shabbos Goy}
You know more women wore rubber soled shoes and didn't answer their cellphones in public, these kinds of thing would NEVER happen.

Your child does not know how to hide it, the best way is to have a clip in your hat to attach it to, they never check the hat.

LAugh if you want to Random, but that's where it starts. When you have no respect for rules as a parent, where do you think the kids learn or think it's ok to flout rules, and then eventually "cheat on their taxes?"

The parents would never do that, but it's hard to teach the minutiae of rule breaking to teenagers.

annoyed, do you have teenage sons?

I agree about the shmura matza in jail. don't put YBS in the same category. The rule in Yeshiva is no phones visible.

unless you are my sister acting anonymous, in which case I will ignore your comments.....

you mean they can have cell phones but no one is allowed to see them being used? So why have them?

There is a fine line between following the rules that are there for a purpose and those that are there for image on the part of the school. Although a rule should be followed, there are times that it is necessary for a child to have access to a phone. True, the phone should be kept away and used when required under the guidelines of the parents, otherwise it should be taken away, or returned to the parent.

However, the schools seem to excel in making the parents look silly or incompetent to their children on a somewhat regular basis, including setting rules and policies that are unrealistic in todays society. That leaves the parents in a bind, tell the child the school is always right, and have your own authority belittled, or explain that the school doesn't always get it right, and risk having the children stop following all the rules and teachings of the school.

There is no correct way to proceed here, and won't be, until the schools get serious about including the parents in the education process, and don't just treat the parents as drivers for the students. Specifically the non-academic portion of the education should include and involve parents, such as ethics, morals, and the parameters of belief.

school rule is you can have a phone, not to use during class time or school time. so in the dorm is okay, during afternoon break is okay.
john- thanks for understanding, you can be my friend ;-)

harry,
I ain't suggesting that location to him, it's just plain gross. His pants are low enough, we don't need further migration
