What No One Told Us

(Disclaimer: We are thrilled our daughter got married. We love our son-in-law. We are grateful she found her Ezer Knegdo. This is not a complaint post at all.)

No one told us that the most stressful part of making a wedding is...... finding gowns- IF you want a color besides white, off-white, or black. Which I don't think are colors. But Jewish rental places do.

No one told us about the endless lists and lists and shopping and returns.

I guess it's a good thing that everyone focuses on the fun, and the planning, and the excitement, and the wedding.

When you lock up the front door at night and you know that all those who now live at home are in- and one isn't.

How you are still on a high from a beautiful and fun wedding, from the simcha, from knowing you have a wonderful son-in-law who is good to your daughter and whom she is crazy about - but-

No one told us how great the void is when one of your children doesn't live at home anymore.

You should have asked me ;)
I'd have told you.

My brocho to you is that you should go through the same difficult 'empty nesting' that I did - one child right after the other and then have the joy of having them iy"H return to your home with new little members in tow.
Suddenly the house doesn't seem that empty anymore.

well, i guess now i have to comment ;)

mazel tov on the wedding!! i loved this post because you could tell there was such raw emotion and feeling when you wrote it. i'm sure it's hard to have a child leave your nest but i know, at this point, my parents dealing with shidduchim and all, they can't wait for me to get married!! when it's all said and done tho, they'll probably feel like you now.
that's life, i guess :)

ps. i actually know your daughter IRL (kind of) and i guess she's super busy "being married" cuz she hasnt responded to my mazel tov email yet!

You expressed that very well. That's exactly what I worry about. (Not the gowns...the empty nest...)

tembow- so right. I was very careful that my post not seem like whining, since we are so glad she got married. it's a good thing, but I can't ignore the empty part...

Be careful what you wish for? Not really, because you truly do want them to get married and be happy.
No one ever said life is easy, even when it is full of joy and good things.
