Padding the Numbers?

I recently put a counter on this blog. Kind of hopeful that there are way more people reading than commenting. I started the number at 100 (I think, if I remember correctly) because I assumed that at least that many people have looked at it since I began.

Now I am beginning to wonder - should I have started it at 1000? I mean, I am not trying to compete with any other blogs, but is it possible that some blogs which only began a few months ago already have 6,000 hits?

I am quite glad for the blog that has had 400,000 hits. That is half a million, people!! Awesome, great for her! Any mathematicians out there? for a two year old blog, half a million hits, that is like 540 hits a day. Is that actually possible? wow.

or are there so many people out there (you young ones, I expect) who check the same blog many times in one day?

fess up, people!
1. if you have your own blog, what was your starting number for your counter?
2. How often in one day do you view the same blog?

My visit count is once a day.

I started at 0, but I put it up right away. I blocked my IP address from showing up, but I use so many different computers and so many different IP addresses that I am included in the numbers anyway.
I try not to look at the stats too much tho. They go up maddeningly slowly sometimes...

Oh, and I put readers but non-commenters (lurkers) in a separate category. I think people should at least comment once just to let you know that they are there. But I guess they are good for something...such as stat counters... ;)

Started at 0- but like SD, sometimes my own hits are counted.
Oh, and yes, there are blogs that get 540 hits in one day. That's a popular Jewish blog- but there are blogs out there in the general blogosphere that get 1,000's of hits per day.

NMF- I have seen those blogs. I found this blog (non Jewish) that has 10000 followers. I can't tell you what kind of jealousy I felt at that. ;) Made my 21 seem awfully insignificant....

Your own checking shows up, so if you post and edit, every time you hit "view blog" it counts as a hit.

Also, your comments section does not allow for just "name" (at least for me). I have to log in to comment.

Super blog by the way! Very entertaining.

hmm i never used a counter that you could choose the starting #.
I read most blogs through google reader so that won't even show up on your counter unless i go into the site to comment.
Love your blog, i think the YBS posts are hilarious - I always show them to my husband! Especially the last one!

Hmmm...can I ask...
Why is it important to you (you=general--anyone can answer this, and please do) to know how many hits your blog gets? I'm wondering if maybe I should be more interested in how many mine has gotten...
(Not that I've had anything new for anyone to read posted since December...yoish...)

CP- it makes no sense to me, but that doesn't stop me from making a check of google analytics part of my nightly routine.
I guess it has a lot to do with your purpose in blogging...

And I would say that yoish is a good way to describe your (non) posting situation. Feel free to surprise us all... :-)
