when did chassidus turn into a religion of believing that the rebbi is a direct liason to G-d?

been there, done that, he was crucified. wasn't that the story?

I think actually this was always a tenet of Chassidus in some way. The Rebbe was much closer to G-d than the average person, who could only HOPE to achieve that level. So the next best thing would be to cling to the Rebbe.

Not sure what's new about it. They say he's like a moshe rabeinu-zohar talks about there being an extension of moshe in every generation- and moshe kinda was a liason to Hashem.
