There is jealousy and then there is increduilty and then there is mind boggling jaw dropping breath stopping shock.
This is beyond even that.
I enjoy an occasional baseball game at the stadium.
I believe baseball is okay for frum yeshiva boys.
I think other people can do what they want with their money.
I think some people have a specialized, incredible talent, and they do so much for a large portion of the population. Like transplant baboon hearts in monkeys, or create fruit computers.
I do not get paying some guy with an idiotic name (yes, I think that is important) one hundred and eighty million dollars to PLAY (For gosh sake we don't even pretend to call it work!) for four, maybe 5 or 6 with extra innings, hours a day, maybe five days a week, for maybe six months.
Sick.
aren't these owners embarrassed? Like when some agent is negotiating a salary and they say a number like this, does anyone at the table flinch?
Is this like some big Emperor's New Clothes story, and one day some owner is going to get up before the seventh inning stretch and scream to the bleachers
"I could be paying off all the heads of every union that is holding our senate hostage and still have leftover money to take my family to a hotel for Pesach!" everyone would probably cheer him even though he made no sense because (tra la la) when your rich they think you really know"
but really, someone, please, enlighten me as to how the numbers got this high for something which is a sport and entertainment.
Interesting thought on chanuka, when we talk about triumph over the Greeks who revered the physical prowess and strength of the human body...

This is america...this is capitalism at its best. And I assure you that your Yankees following friends and relatives are very happy with this particular chanuka present from the Steinbrenner family.
I hate the Yankees. Ergo I hate everything they do. They think they are the best team. (I know they are, so what)
let's go Mets!
Didn't you guys steal johan santana for an obscene amount of money from my beloved twins last year?
irrelevant. The Yankees are arrogant. The Mets are humble.
Humble? No, you're just not good enough, and never have been, to have anything to be proud of. At least the Yankees have won a couple times.
Stam, it's physically impossible for a New Yorker to be humble.
I hate both the Yankees and the Mets!
I just say, "Go New York!" whatever team is winning, that's the one I'm rooting for...as long as it's New York.
It's a win/win situation.
(I don't care much for organized sports you might have figured)
Hey, it's hard work too, you know. Can you hit a small sphere whizzing through the air at about 96mph? Didn't think so.
And they're retired by middle age. They need the millions to tide them through their old age, if they can't get any product endorsement contracts.
er, I know I am a little late on the pick up, but as a former obsessive yankee fan (who has since gotten a life), I wanted to put in my 2 cents (or $180 million, whichever you prefer.)
Firstly, the whole money thing is ridiculous for a lot of reasons. For starters, it is a very sad world that has the entertainers making the most money, as opposed to people who put their lives on the line doing service for us.
Also, it is really sad when you remember that the money just comes from...the fans. Priorities anyone?
If you ask my father, the yankees are a bunch of overpaid, lazy former superstars, and steinbrenner has ruined the team by buying all of them... He also thinks that its awful that they replaced the house that ruth built with the house that steinbrenner built...
And lastly, why you pickin on texiera? In a game that has players with names like Jorge DeJesus, Aubrey Huff, and Phillepe Allou, Taxiera is actually a really normal name. ;)
